A Quantity Surveyor or QS is appointed in a construction project to provide expert advice on all aspects of the economics of buildings and construction costs. This could be for a building of any size and age, from a vast new build sports stadium to a single storey house extension or an ancient church.
Residential projects
In a residential project we use our experience of the construction industry and our expert judgment to assist the smooth running of the construction project. For us, a successful outcome is one where the project is completed at the best value for money for the client. Ideally, we are engaged from the start of a project when we will prepare an initial budget from the architect drawings.
If required, we can help our client to find an appoint a contractor, helping them through the tender process and advise on the different contract options.
By having a clear and realistic budget from the outset and putting appropriate documents in place our clients minimise the risk of a dispute with their contractor.
Dealing with the unexpected
Nevertheless, unexpected things can happen on any construction project, and part of our role is to identify any problems as soon as possible so that they can be managed effectively. Where a potential issue is discovered at an early stage it can be tackled proactively to minimise delays and reduce any additional costs that may arise.
In summary, whatever the size or overall value of the construction project our role is to provide the client with an estimate of costs, assess what quantity of building materials and labour will be required and to prepare project timelines. For a client, the quantity surveyor is the person watching and managing any costs associated with the project, while safeguarding the client’s position in any cost-related discussions.
